Gulet

(BRIGANTINE / SCHOONER)

Traditional gullets, are specific built boats planned for fishery and transportation used at the western and southern shores of Anatolia. Skilled workmen shaped the trunk and inner parts of pine, chestnut and mahogany timber.

In time, Brigantines have taken shape in accordance to today’s contemporary needs. They differ in size, standard and passenger capacity.

All include comfortable cabins, shower, WC, living room and sun terrace. Traditional Turkish Brigantines are specific designed wooden yachts, equipped with engine and sail power which are used to sail along the beautiful shores of the Mediterranean coastline. The decks are arranged to fulfill the needs of a comfortable daily life.

In general the rump deck is used as the dining and relaxation area. The front deck as the sun terrace.

Even though they still reflect their traditional design of the fishery and transportation period, the expanded areas of the contemporary planned boats, are nowadays fitted out with modern accessories and equipment and offer larger room.

Another specific feature of the Brigantines is they are completely hand-made boats. These precious handicrafts are made out of pine, chestnut and mahogany timber. They regained their importance in 1960 by “The Fisherman of Halikarnassus” Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı and his close friends, a group of famous writers and scientists like Ezra Erhat, Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu. They first discovered the great pleasure of a Blue Cruise sailing along the shores of Karya ve Likya and sharing the beauties they discovered. Their experiences during the cruise introduced the Brigantine to the world. The life style on this boat, the beauties of nature that surrounds it, turned their blue cruise into a philosophic activity and inspired today’s charter trips.

Engine power is used to maket he Brigantine sail. According to its plan “mirror rump” , “melon rump” , “trirhandil” are the types available. Tirhandil types also have the supporting power of the sails.

As they are heavily built, sail power can olny be used under convenient weather and sea condition. They are built with one or two masts according to their largeness. In comparison to sport boats with lighter sails, their loft isn’t long which allows pulling up and anchoring alongside shallow bays.

Brigantines are fitted out with all kinds of comfort and equipment and provide a relaxing and memorable vacation for family and friends.
